Never to Early (or Late) to Plan Your Next Deck, Patio, Pergola, or other Outdoor Living in KS

If you know Kansas weather, then you know you can enjoy your home’s outdoor features pretty much any time of the year. For the Kansas homeowner that wants to look forward to next spring and summer, now is a good time to start planning what your outdoor living area improvements will be. This could be a replacing a deck, expanding your patio, putting up a pergola or gazebo, adding a fence, or even an outdoor kitchen with a fireplace or pit for those cooler days.

Decks & Porches

At S&A Construction, we have worked on adding to a home a covered or uncovered front porch and a first or second story decks to numerous homes. The first thing you should decide on is how big. Size can be limited by what your property can handle, but also by budget and potentially local ordinances. Getting ideas by looking around other homes for examples is a great start, but after that, you will want to sit down with your contractor to start planning the details. There are a variety of materials you can work with but typically these are the most common we’ve found in Kansas:

  • Pressure Treated Lumber (A.C.Q): Common, strong, last about 15 years, typically least expensive, weathers to turn gray even with cleaning.
  • Cedar or Redwood:  Resistant to rot, lasts about 20 year, not as resistant to heavy foot traffic, weathers to turn a gray color.
  • Trex/Composite: Made of plastic and wood fibers, pre-colored, does not splinter or need to be stained/painted, tend to be the most expensive but generally warrantied up to 25 years.

Patios, Outdoor Pits/Fireplaces, Pergolas, Gazebos, & Pavilions

If you have a patio already and looking to expand or even add one, you will want to consider a covered and uncovered patio. A covered patio can add some additional protection from the sun, which can make it easier to enjoy the outdoors in the Kansas heat. It can also make your home a lot more attractive and allow you to hang additional decorations and vegetation. Other alternatives can include adding a pergola, gazebo or pavilion.
